Heather Mateus Sappenfield: Hello. I am Heather Mateus Sappenfield. Sappenfield is my married name, but Mateus is my maiden name. It comes from my Portuguese grandfather. He and his family were indentured servants for Dole and picked pineapple in Hawaii for them for five years. Afterward, Dole sponsored their immigration to Orange County, California. Upon their arrival he faced such resentment and prejudice that he would never speak of it. I use that name now to honor him and my heritage.
