Teri Kanefield: Hello, my name is Teri Kanefield. My last name has an interesting history. My paternal grandfather and his brother made it up, so any Kanefields are related to me. My grandfather's name in Poland was Knafel. When he and his brother came to the United States in the 30s, they first spent some time in England working for boat fare. They decided that Kanefield sounded more English and dignified than Knafel. They also we afraid that Knafel sounded Jewish, and in the 1930s there was a lot of prejudice against Jews, particularly in Europe, and so they were afraid of being identified as Jewish, so they decided to call themselves Kanefield. The irony for my poor grandfather is that people meet me and say, "Kanefield, you must be Jewish." Only Jewish people made up names like Kanefield.
