Joanne Rossmassler Fritz: Hello. My name is Joanne Rossmassler Fritz. When I was growing up, I was Joanne Rossmassler. My parents didn't give me a middle name. So when I married my husband, I took his last name, Fritz, and Rossmassler became my middle name. But it's not hyphenated. Libraries seem to think my last name is Rossmassler-Fritz, but it's not, it's Fritz. Both my middle name and last name are German in origin. Rossmassler was originally spelled with an umlaut over the A, and pronounced more like ross-MICE-ler. I've been told Rossmassler means horse master in German, but I've never learned German, and it might just be a rumor. Fritz is also German and means peaceful ruler. You might be familiar with the phrase on the fritz. I'm a survivor of two ruptured brain aneurysms, and I've been on the fritz since my illnesses. So the next time you hear someone say on the fritz, think of me.
