Nancy Churnin: My name is Nancy Churnin. The name Nancy, my parents, they knew they wanted a name that began with an N because my great-grandmother's name is Nechama, which meant gift, and that's who I'm actually named for, my great-grandmother, Nechama. They turned it into Nancy because my parents fell in love with a Frank Sinatra song, Nancy with the Laughing Face. And to this day in my mother's house, they have a record of Nancy with the Laughing Face, the old vinyl record, and that's the song on it. And my father, when he served, he was a veteran of World War II, Frank Sinatra actually came to perform for the troops and he got his signature on a piece of PO money, and he's got that there. And so we have that framed, and that's always something that they saved and put aside for me, Nancy with the Laughing Face.
Churnin is pronounced like churning the butter without the G. That is from my father's family. And I think that's because my father's mother originally came from an area in Russia and I think that was a Russian name. But what was interesting is that my grandfather, whom she married, was also a Churnin. They were Churnin spelled differently. My Churnin is my grandfather's Churnin, C-H-U-R-N-I-N, like the churning butter without the G. And he is actually British and served in World War I.
