Anna Kerz: Hi. My name is Anna Kerz. The Anna part of my name was more or less a given because at the time when I was born it was the custom in my family for girls to be named after their godmothers. My godmother's name was Anna. There it was. I had a name.

The Kerz part I got when I married my husband. Now the thing of it is that Kerz is a German name. Technically it should be pronounced Carrots. At the same time I got married I started teaching and so the first day of class I walked in and I said, "Hello, boys and girls. My name is Mrs. Kerz." They all looked at me and they said, "Carrots?" I thought then and there that maybe we should change this name just a little, and so I've been Anna Kerz ever since.
