Book Descriptions
for Animal Countdown by Laura Vaccaro Seeger
From Cooperative Children's Book Center (CCBC)
A beautifully designed peek-a-boo counting book uses a single die-cut on each page spread to give a glimpse of an animal that is fully revealed and named by folding out (or in this case, up!) the die-cut page. The numbers, which are spelled out on the left-hand side of each spread, count down from ten to one, starting with ten sea otters and ending with one snow leopard. Together the left and right pages of each spread create a full scene, placing the animal in a natural setting. The final page of narrative notes that each of the animals is endangered, while the end matter repeats each animal’s picture along with brief information. The lush mixed-media illustrations blend realism and artfulness.
