Book Description
for Sleepy by Jennifer Ward and Robin Page
From Cooperative Children's Book Center (CCBC)
All animals sleep, but they don’t all do it in the same way. “If you’re a … koala, / you are such a sleepyhead / in your eucalyptus bed. / You’ll snack and chew an hour or two, / then back to sleep when you are through.” The sleep habits of a koala and 16 other creatures are briefly detailed in a delightful second-person narrative followed by a brief paragraph of additional information (set off in a smaller font) about their sleep habits. Each creature is pictured in color illustrations that manage to bridge realism and coziness. A book sure to elicit a yawn or two ends with a human child tucked into bed: “at sunrise you are on the go! / But once it’s dark it’s time to slow …” Additional information about the various types of animal sleep shown and how much each creature sleeps (including humans at various ages) is provided at volume’s end.
