for With Dad by Richard Jackson and Brian Floca

“In Michigan country, on a two-run road, along a stream called the upper South Branch of the Au Sable River …” In this autobiographical picture book’s first-person narrative, a boy (white) of nine or so describes a fishing trip with his dad. His dad lets him help steer the jeep as they drive along a rutted road to where they will camp. Clearly set in the past, the narrative offers a lovely account of the setting and this family’s warm bond, which includes his mom, who is back home but sends a teasing note along. The story lacks a huge dramatic arc but serves as an excellent example for writing about memories, while the final page turn adds context and contemporary relevance. While still set in the past, some time has passed, and the boy now imagines his dad driving a different Jeep “in a far-away war … I want Dad home / safe / and soon / and warm.” The soft, detailed pen-and-ink, watercolor, and gouache illustrations are a perfect accompaniment to this poignant story. A brief note from the illustrator adds historical context to the time period (early 1950s).
