Book Description
for In My Mosque by M.O. Yuksel and Hatem Aly
From Cooperative Children's Book Center (CCBC)
Fictional children at the same mosque share observations about attending mosque, providing information on religious practice as well as child-centered details of the experience. “In my mosque, we line our shoes in rows like colorful beads before stepping inside. I wiggle my toes and sink into the silky-soft carpet … the muezzin’s melodious call to prayer echoes in the air … aunties’ hijabs sway like a sea of flowers as we move through our prayers.” Digital illustrations incorporating background textures and suggesting mosaic patterns show racially diverse boys and girls of various ages. Segregated by gender during prayers, they form a joyful, inviting group at volume’s end: “You are welcome in my mosque.” A glossary and information about mosques, including a list of famous and historical mosques worldwide, are included. (Ages 4-8)
