Book Description
for Olivia by Ian Falconer
From Cooperative Children's Book Center (CCBC)
There’s plenty of visual and verbal humor in this low-key picture story about a porcine preschooler with a mind of her own. Illustrated with impeccable black-and-white line art, ingeniously highlighted with bits of red, the understated story follows Olivia through a series of typical daily activities. She chooses what to wear, copes with her little brother, goes to an art museum (which inspires her to create her own version of a Jackson Pollack painting on her bedroom wall, much to her mother’s dismay), and negotiates three bedtime books instead of one. The perfect blend of text and illustration is likely to amuse adults as much as it does young listeners, who may recognize themselves in Olivia. (Ages 3-7)
