When Mom says he can have a pet, Jack suggests various animals— elephant, lion, polar bear, Tyrannosaurus Rex, giraffe, rhino, bison, crocodile, shark—and mother patiently explains why each would not be suitable. When Jack suggests a dog, Mother agrees to a little puppy. The surprise comes with the final foldout page showing that, instead of a small dog, Jack has chosen a gigantic shaggy beast named Fang.
