Book Descriptions
for Augustine by Mélanie Watt
From The United States Board on Books for Young People (USBBY)
Augustine is a young penguin whose Dad is being transferred to the North Pole. The move precipitates all kinds of feelings as Augustine packs up her room, says goodbye to her friends and extended family, and makes the trip North on Penguin Air. After finding a new house, a very nervous Augustine goes to her new class, where she discovers that her drawings are a wonderful “ice breaker” and a way to help her make new friends. A gentle story about dealing with new situations, Augustine is also full of layered ice and cold/North Pole humor wrapped up in Augustine’s versions of classic paintings, such as da Vinci’s Mona Lisa, Wood’s American Gothic, and War hol’s Campbell Soup Can. sc
