Book Descriptions
for Garmann's Summer by Stian Hole
From Cooperative Children's Book Center (CCBC)
From The United States Board on Books for Young People (USBBY)
Summer is over, and six-year-old Garmann will be starting school. He is scared. He asks his three elderly aunts if they are ever afraid. The aunts admit to a fear of having to eventually use a walker and a fear of icy pave ments. His parents share their fears with Garmann. His father tells him “I think everyone is scared of something” (n.p.). This unique story ends with Garmann gazing out of the window, still wondering what school will be like. Hole’s exploration of childhood emotion is expressed visually in intriguing mixed-media collages. 2009 USBBY Outstanding International Books List, 2007 Bologna Ragazzi Award, 2009 Nordic Association of School Librarians Children’s Literature Prize, 2009 ALA Batchelder Honor Book, 2009 NYPL and
